Our Story

Torrance Trip began with a simple obsession: understanding why certain stories refuse to let us go. Why does The Shining, published nearly half a century ago, still crawl under our skin? Why do we return to haunted houses, doomed families, and the slow unraveling of the human mind?

This blog is a love letter to horror — not just the blood and the jump scares, but the literature. The craft. The way a well-constructed horror novel can illuminate truths about isolation, addiction, family, and fear that no other genre dares to touch. We take horror seriously as literature, and we believe it deserves the same critical attention as any literary form.

Our name is a nod to Jack Torrance, the doomed protagonist of Stephen King's The Shining. "Trip" suggests both the journey of reading — the trip a great book takes you on — and the psychological descent that defines the best horror. We are travelers in the dark, and we invite you to walk with us.

Our Philosophy

We believe horror is the most honest genre. It does not look away from what frightens us — it stares directly at it. The best horror writing is about real human vulnerability: the fear of losing control, of losing the people we love, of losing ourselves. Stephen King understood this when he placed a recovering alcoholic in a haunted hotel; Shirley Jackson understood it when she made Hill House a mirror for Eleanor Vance's collapsing psyche.

Horror is also one of the most democratic literary forms. It thrived in cheap paperbacks, in pulp magazines, in dog-eared paperbacks passed between friends. We honor that tradition by making literary analysis accessible, readable, and free of academic jargon. You do not need a degree to appreciate what makes a sentence frightening.
